When a file is deleted, the space it takes up is considered to be free space. When you download, and install a program (such as recovery software), it could possibly overwrite the file you are trying to recover.I have found the best thing to do is to recover from a live cd. As soon as you find out you need to recover a file, turn your computer off. From another computer, download a live CD. The live cd does not use the hard drive to boot the computer, thus keeping your files safe.Try BootMed. bootmed.com It is a live cd that comes with tutorials and 4-5 file recovery programs.

Ironically, installing recovery software can destroy the files you are trying to recover.
