Unpopular FREE Rising AntiVirus Worthy of Praise – AVG FREE Alternative

I remembered once seeing this sentence at a website that says “nearly everyone and their DOG knows about AVG and is testing the latest AVG FREE version 8 right now”. I believe that is very true because I have a friend who is 50 over years old and he once “suggested” AVG to me… He is a business man and not even a computer literate person. That proves how successful AVG’s marketing is.

In my opinion, the latest AVG 8 is a bit bloated and not as light as the previous version 7.5. In fact, many software has started to add more and more feature in every major release and that makes it bloated. If you’re using AVG FREE 8, I’d suggest you to switch to another one which I’ve tested and found to be better than AVG. Also, recently more and more Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 key that gotten from Barclay’s promotion has been blacklisted. You could switch to this antivirus if you want…

RISING Antivirus 2008 is developed by a Chinese software company in Beijing. It protects your computers against all types of viruses, Trojans, Worms, Rootkits and other malicious programs. Ease of use, Active Defense technology, Patented Unknown Virus Scan&Clean technology and Patented Smartupdate technology make RISING Antivirus ‘ install-and-forget ‘ product that lets you focus on what you really want to do.

FREE Rising Antivirus

RISING Antivirus Free Edition is a solution with no cost to personal users for the life of RISING Antivirus 2008 while still provides the SAME level of detection and protection capability as Rising Antivirus 2008. RISING Support centre will also provides technical support for Free Edition users. RISING expects more users can enjoy Lion-strong security protection.

I’ve tested Rising Antivirus free edition on my desktop test system with a few trojans. Some are public versions which is detectable by most antiviruses and some private which can only be detected by certain good and powerful antivirus such as Kaspersky. When Rising AV sees the virus, it doesn’t immediately notify me that it has found a virus. Only when I try to run it, Rising File Monitor Alert appears telling me that it has found a virus and giving me the option to clean, delete or ignore the file. This is good because it doesn’t constantly scan in background which will slow down your computer. It can detect all public version of trojans that I try to copy to the computer.

Next, I tried scanning a private version of trojan with Rising Antivirus but it did not detect anything. I was a bit disappointed, thinking that this is like any other free AVs out there that doesn’t have a good proactive engine. When I run the private trojan, it did not infect my system! I suspect that Rising Antivirus somehow blocked the threat. So I disabled all Rising Antivirus auto-protect, and ran the trojan again. Now the system is infected. I re-enabled auto-protect and ran Hidden Process Detection. It detected a hidden process which spawned by the trojan. I ran a scan on the memory and boot records and it was able to detect and remove the private trojan. I AM IMPRESSED! As you can see, although Rising Antivirus did not have the virus definition to identify the private trojan as a threat, but it can somehow block it from infecting the computer. Even if it is infected, it can detect hidden process and remove it from memory.

Is Rising Antivirus a bloatware? Here are the process that I’ve identified which belongs to Rising Antivirus.
ravtask.exe – 676K
ravstub.exe – 3411K
ravmond.exe – 8192K
ravmon.exe – 2048K
ccenter.exe -1652K
All 5 processes above takes up about 15MB from memory. Since most of the computer nowadays come with at least 1GB of RAM, you wouldn’t really feel that Rising Antivirus is hogging on your computer. It is not heavy in system resource usage nor light. Moderate would be the best word to describe Rising Antivirus’ system resource usage.

Rising Antivirus can run on Windows 98 up to Windows Vista 64 bit. The system requirements to run on non-Vista computer is Pentium3 500 MHz, 64 MB of RAM and a standard VGA 24-bit true color. As for Windows Vista, Pentium3 1 GHz CPU, 512 MB of RAM and a Standard VGA 24-bit true color.

Rising AV may be good. But it would be better if some comparison was provided with some of the AV such as Grisoft’s free edition.

You did not mention anything about the availability of updates how are the database updated.

Any way nice find Ray. This AV I think will rock in the free world especially in the cyber.

    • Merlin_Magii

Looks interesting – worth a try.
Ray did you notice that Brothersoft also appear to offer a free Firewall?

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

The update is daily and automated.

hmm i used to use that antivirus… turns out it sorta dies in front of a real virus so yah i switched to NOD32

I don’t mind testing some real virus with Rising Antivirus. I’ve only tested trojans… I should try to look for some virus and rootkis.

I totally disagree with you because you cant always scan each and every file/drive before you open it and check for viruses. What if you forget to scan a cd/pendrive and accidently open it.Thats the only reason i use kaspersky because of it ability to scan each and every file before you open/click.

Interesting article on Washington Post (Link Below )
Report: China Home to Half of All Malicious Web Sites

      QUESION:
What would be a way (Besides using firewall like commodo ) to see and check what info if any.. this antivirus program is sending home? if it is calling home?
Do antivirus programs send info like Directory entries in C:\Program Files etc etc? I have always wondered that.

A problem I have consistently faced with AV software is that they refuse to run on ‘Server’ OS.

Software meant for the desktop should run equally well on the server. I am certainly not expecting enterprise features. Yet most of these programs refuse to install and prompt you to acquire the enterprise version instead.

Does RAV install on Windows 2K3 server? Has anyone tried it?

      thanks dude…
gonna see if this works with my 128 mb of ram pc and a 256 mb of ra pc too..
the new AVG IS A BIT SLOW ON MY PC NOW… I HOPE THIS WILL sort it out…
does this include ALL IN ONE protection??
and theres no limits to it is there??

    • WallyAnchor

Sounds like it’s worth a look, but going by their server speed it’s a bit of a red herring. A bit if dumb logic here admittedly, but (these days) I generally associate slow downloads with an inept company.

Downloading for almost 1 1/2 hours so far, & only 76% downloaded. Should take maybe 3 minutes absolute maximum. Maybe it’s worth a try, but so far it’s not looking good.

    • utkarsh30june

Godd AV!!!.I think AVG 8.0 is a bit bloated and slower than AVG 7.5 but I use KIS 2009 from Barclays :)

The RAV user interface is easy to use with just the right blend of auto and manual controls.

RAV appears to be a well designed and very comprehensive AV product, however I seriously suggest caution before installing Rising AntiVirus (RAV).

Apart from a false positive on my first scan, it also runs a process called RavMonD.exe which gets a lot of bad press on the net.

The worst aspect however is that Comodo Firewall alerts me that RavMonD.exe is attempting to “alter” every .exe file I copy from my hard-disk to a usb flash-drive.

I’m not sure what Comodo thinks RAV is doing but what ever it is this is completely unacceptable and to me suggests that RAV is trying to insert its own trojan under the covers.

The fact that this product derives from a country with a proven no-care / no-responsibility track record when it comes to respecting western technology and western copyright, and this alone gives zero confidence about entrusting it to look after my computer’s security.

      Not Good Raymond!

i would think twice before installing any chinese software on my pc — let alone a free anti vir , they arn\’t exactly known for there generosity ,more for what they can rip off you. i find it strange you compare it along the well tested & proven AVG ,- in your own words \”I don

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

As much as I detest China for being ONE of the country that has the highest rate of piracy for nearly everything, Rising Software is NOT a chinese software. They have office in Australia, USA, Canada, Germany, Italy and Singapore.

The main reason why I only tested it with the private trojans I have is because they have a very sophisticated infection method and if an antivirus can detect, block and remove the trojan, it is smart enough. Unfortunately for AVG users, I’ve tested this trojan on AVG and it didn’t even find anything suspicious.

    • miden

      seems real nice ^^

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

Why not try AVG FREE 8.0 on 256MB ram? AVG takes up about 100MB memory…

    • Gordon

I’ve had it on now for a few days, it seems fine.
Updates daily, Not near as bloated as AVG.
      Like you I was Impressed.

      Thanks Ray, another great find.

As for the slow link, just google rising antivirus
very easy to find a fast download.

    • Mick

Hi,Thanks Raymond! I also have had it for a few days and so far so good.I have also tried the big three (AVG,Avast and Avira) and it seems very light on resources except memory but I am overall impressed. What I have found though it does require a little bit of configuration to make it work as you want it to but even if you miss something in the setup it will still pick it up on a scan. For a virtual newcomer it has a lot of potential (Its got the lot, real time protection,E mail,Boot time scan and probably more that I haven\\\\\\\’t discovered). The only thing I\\\\\\\’ve found so far is the help on configuring could be better but I feel this is only going to improve with newer versions and I hope they keep it free!A good comparison test with other AV\\\\\\\’s would also help.Regards Mick!P.S Keep up the good work Raymond…………

My Kaspersky Antivirus Key Has Expired do you recomend me to use rising antivirus?

    • anon

I think it’s totally unfair you’re making these assumptions based on where the company is located..

What would be interesting is if you compared this product to a few other leading brands and tested trojans and viruses on them all.

    • David

      Hi Anon,

      you are very right !

we should ignore company location ,just focus on pruduts comparison.

As i searched from google, Rising Antivirus is No.1 in China , more than 60 Million users are trusting Rising antivirus software . i think users can not be wrong , Rising is serious Antivirus vendor.

about RavMond.exe , i get the following information from rising website :
      http://www.rising-global.com/Published/InformationCenter/NewsEvents/2008-07-04/20080704180017.htm

    • Neil

      @ David and Anon..

Will you guys go to work in Afghanistan/Iraq if you are getting paid a $100 more than u get now???

Thats exactly what these guys above are worried about using a chines software (particularly AV which has access to all of your system)! Its No.1 in china and those millions of users are chines! There are tons of news articles about chines ppl hacking gov servers across the globe!
How do you think you should trust a software from there? Who knows what information the software sends home? I am not a computer fart so dont want to bother myself worrying about what this piece of shit installed on my computer is doing!

    • Mick Byrne

Have been using this for a month now and cannot fault it.It has so much to offer when you configure it to your preferences (which once you check out all the settings you should see what I mean) that it has just as much to offer as Kaspersky ,which I tried through the free offer thanks to Raymond. The only thing wrong with Kaspersky, for me, is I only have 1.5mz cpu and 256mb of ram and it really slowed my machine right down but using Rising does not slow my comp down apart from using a fair bit of memory. As I have posted before it works great(for me personally anyway).I would also like to add that all the paranoia about it being \”from China\” is (as far as I am concerned) utter rubbish. Mick

    • Mick

Just d/l the free firewall (very hard to get the actual free one) and seems to work very well so far.Loads of features and seems low on resources. So far so good!

    • Lien

      To brayden (№29):
Well, with this antivirus he probably is still trying to open his browser… few computers can work fast with such amounts of memory nowadays…
Generally, I\’d advise Avira – and a paid version instead of a free one. German software really feels better than Chinese.
The license is quite expensive, I agree, but you may find links for some promotions… they offer 3-month keys, one per mailbox… and if you have several mailboxes, just refresh your key four times a year.
It contains decent online protection and a quite acceptable scanner – after all, it does cost 40 euros a year.

    • Mick

Well with Rising free anti virus and Rising free firewall my machine is working great, I might add that it is also 256mb ram, and with the free firewall I do not get the “low virtual memory “warning. So as far as I am concerned they are both keepers for me.I have put the firewall through the usual firewall tests,PC Flank,GRC,Leak test and a few others and came up trumps on all of them maybe not a real comprensive test on it but done the same with Online Armor(which I might add is a fantastic firewall) and came up with the same results .Just set and forget with both and they do their job.Thumbs up from me.Regards Mick

    • Mick

Hi,Please disregard the “low on virtual memory” bit in the above post it.Got up this morning and there was the warning sitting there. Can someone tell me (upart from getting more ram)if there is a work around or program that will increase my virtual memory for the time being? My comp has 1.5mhz cpu and 256mb ram.Regards Mick

    • Mick

Hi, Just realised that I have been saying my cpu is 1.5 mhz and it should be 1.5ghz.I have also realised that I had a fair bit running in the background which I have got rid of(did not really need them)so hopefully this may help on my “memory overload”. Mick.

    • DICK

      RAV really good!!!

    • Mick

Hi,Just to let you know Rising AV and Rising Firewall are working great so far (Both have already updated to version 20.53 automatically) and I have sorted out the virtual memory glitch I had(was more on my end.To much crap running in background for my system to handle).Very happy with both of them.Best I have had. They both work great!.Mick

    • avdude15

So you are recommending Rising based on testing of a handful of trojans – in an age where the numbers of viruses run in the hundreds of thousands?

Doesn’t that seem a trifle silly? As far as I can tell, Rising has never passed a VB100 test, or and ICSA test – the 2 tests that look at detection of a significant number of viruses in the wild.

Your test is like a health checkup that screens for only one disease. It doesn’t give me a great feeling of confidence in the results.

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

@avdude15: I did not say that by testing one private trojan that I have and that AV is perfect. The trojan that I have is designed to bypass detection of all antivirus program and if an AV can detect it, it must have a pretty good heuristic analyzing method.

I am not afraid of virus because usually they are programmed to replicate and cause destruction to the system which can be easily removed. But for trojan/rootkit, a hacker could snoop on your computer and get all your private data, password and etc without you even knowing.

    • Mick

Raymond,The only tests from VB100 and ICSA ,as far as I can tell, are on earlier versions from 2006 and 2007.The latest version 2008 20.54.20 has not been tested and am sure when it does there will be a vast improvement on its previous versions .Do not get me wrong as I am not saying this is the best out there but for me it does its job as I require and has much more to offer compared to the others.

    • Kissol

I’m using Rising Firewall Free only. Very good and easy-to-use, with few resourse usage.

I was using PC Tools Firewall, but now I don’t want other firewall. 5 mb cpu against 15 mb PC Tools.

Effective and without some annoyances that P Tools has.

      Glad!!!

Thanks for the information David.I was trying to get this info but the nearest I could get was for the 2007 version(which apparently just missed out by a whisker on VB100).Glad to hear it passed. Both Rising Anti Virus and Firewall are still working flawlessly and I cannot fault them.Fantastic programs!!Mick

RISING is the most popular antivirus software in China.

These days,I am testing RISING2009 beta.I think it\\\\\\\’s very perfect!Web Trojan Defense can defend most Trojans on the web. With Cloud Security,RISING2009 can scan more and more virus.

hallo ich habe eine fragen ist das normal wenn ich beim windows starte dass etwas kommt von skip startup scan ???

OK, well here are the international clients of Rising according to their website:-

      International Clients:

      · Ajinomoto(Japan)
      · Citect(Australia)
      · Lotte(Japan)
      · Sanyo(Japan)
      · Spirax Sarco(UK)
      · Yamaha(Japan)
      · Bosch(Germany)
      · Komatsu(Japan)
      · Mitsubishi(Japan)
      · SME Bank(Korea)
      · MTL Instruments Ltd.(UK)
      · Otto Bock Healthcare(Germany)

It seems unlikely that Japanese companies, especially banks, are going to use a program that is likely to send information to Chinese Intelligence Services, as many of the posts here suggest.
It seems to me that the most serious virus in evidence here is “envy” – of a country which just might prevent the US of A’s government from continuing its self-appointed mission to “lead” the world

      Raymond & fellow readers:

I support over two hundred clients in the Central Coast of Califronia, so I am obligated to test and review all manner of security software. I have a few comments on Rising, that are generally very positive.

First, it does exactly as advertised, and is complete and thorough. It is relatively fast, with a low resource demand.

Next, the updates are regular and easily repaired, should something wack the update engine.

Now, the cautions: If you invoke their firewall or Email security, the proxy settings are not automatically reset should you choose to uninstall the RAV engine. That\’s too bad, because in some cases, getting e-mail and Internet back are long, loathsome tasks.

Be very careful about your settings, and avoid using the highest detection level unless absolutely necessary, as this slows the scans way down and can create many false reports — now this is not unique to RAV, but I feel its worth repeating here, as the scan really slows down.

Finally, in rating the product, I would say that the user interface, though better than many other free AVs (I like Avast a lot, but their interface is terrible), needs a bit of work to really win over the majority of home users. AV protection for home users absolutely needs a user interface designed for home users, not Admin or IT pros. However, that being said, RAV does a very good job, and tries very hard to clean or quarantine files before ripping them to shreds in a fit of glee, which many otherwise excellent products seem to choose to do on their own.

I would give it 4.5 out of 5 stars Also,
after thoroughly analyzing my net traffic, I can assure the users that Rising does not send back data to Beijing on any regular basis. I believe it is a completely legitimate and honest bit of work, and I applaud the team of engineers who worked some long hours to improve this product from the early 2005-2006 version, which was good, but not nearly as full featured and effective as the latest version. If your machine can handle the load, I would recommend using this along with ESET NOD32 or with Avast AV. Yes, it\’s tricky and the order of installation means everything…install ESET first, then Rising, or Rising first and then Avast.

      Best Wishes!

      Zenbob96

I have installed it a virtual PC and it catches every virus I throw at it. My personal collection of viruses (actually old 90s viruses) which I tested against ClamAV, Moon Secure Antivirus and AVG.

Moon and Clam catched 50% of them.. AVG did better missing just a few, but Rising got them all. Good.

And I just want to add that Rising Antivirus is part of GOOGLE PACK in China.

      Regards Ray

RAV and RIS 2010 are great products, tested and running on Desktop OS (Win2k, WinXP, Vista, 7) and running on Server OS (2k,2k3,2k8), has a high detection rate and great user interface and management restrictions.

      Recommended Product.

      Hi all,

Did you guys know that Rising is, besides Clamwin, the ONLY FREE Antivirus that you can install on a SERVER? Yes, Rising installs on Windows Server 2003 and higher! This means FREE real-time protection on your servers!

      Thank you, Rising!

    • Richard

Ah yes, one side note: to have Rising detect the antivirus tester, you need to set put all settings in Rising to HIGH!
I asked this to the Rising developers, and they confirmed.
