Which Process is Causing Windows Taking Too Long To Completely Boot Up?

You have a super fast computer which you’ve paid thousands of dollars for it. You think that since you have a powerful computer, you can install hundreds of software and let it autostart in your Windows tray. Weirdly, your computer is still taking a long time to completely boot up to Windows. That is normal because every startup programs requires a few seconds to launch. If you have 10 autostart programs and each program takes an average 6 seconds to startup, that means your computer will take an extra minute to completely boot up Windows. If you’re unlucky and there is a program that is corrupted or has conflicts with other software, most likely your computer will hang for a while or you cannot get in Windows at all until it is removed from autostartup.

Here is is a powerful yet easy to understand software that is able to trace the the time the process is started and also duration taken to completely start a process. This way you can know straight away know which is the culprit that is causing the slow startup without guessing.

Boot Log XP is to allow you to search for troubleshooting Windows boot-up problems in Windows XP. Boot Log XP creates the new boot log file and allows you to view it visually.

Boot Log XP

The BootLog XP application was designed to allow you to get complete information about Windows boot in a graphic way. It will display the the start time and load time of each started application. Load Time means the time that the application uses for starting the executable file and all related DLLs.

Let me show you how easy it is to use BootLog XP. After installation, launch BootLog XP from Windows Start Menu. You will only see 4 big buttons, Test at Next Boot, Analyse Boot Log, Help and Exit. Click the Test at Next Boot button and click Yes when prompted to restart. Your computer will restart as normal and when you’re logged in to Windows, BootLog XP will record the start and load time of each started application. The result will be shown in a easy to understand diagram. As you can see at the image below, WgaTray.exe takes 8.572 seconds to load completely….

Analyse Bootlog File

BootLog XP can only be used in Windows XP/2003. It is compatible with the latest Windows XP SP3 and with all known antiviral software.

The downside of this program is it a shareware that cost $19.95 for a single user license but you can use BootLog XP fully functional for 30 days. So if you encounter any computer that take very long time to completely boot up Windows, you can install the trial version of BootLog XP to identify the program that is causing the slow startup. Just for your information, the latest version of BootLog XP has been cracked (BootLog.XP.1.5.cracked-SND.zip) by syk071c from Team SnD on July 16th 2008.

This tool is very useful to me and I hope it can also help you identify which program is slow in loading during Windows startup.

      Thanks mate, useful software, cheers!

@erdi: I scanned the cracked version of BootLog XP and 13 AVs out of 36 picked it up as a suspicious file. I then analyzed the file at ThreatExpert and didn’t find anything wrong with the file.

It could be possible that you’ve downloaded from a bad source.

I tried the software and the weird thing, he found me some softwares who are running at windows start up.
But when I check these softwares, they are disable for runing at the windows start up.

Any idea how I could fix that ?

      Thanks in advance.

I’ve tried Microsoft Bootvis before and it’s not as easy as BootLog XP.

@capo: Use Autoruns to check for the autostartup. Some program’s services will still run even though you’ve set it not to start on Windows bootup.

Raymond > Thanks for the answer.
I got Autoruns from your forum and it works fine.

      Hi Raymond,

I wish there was an application that logs the SHUTDOWN process in exactly the same way that Boot Log XP does startup. I’ve never had any bootup problems, but now my PC has been hanging like forever at both “saving your settings” and “windows is shutting down” stages. I have the same settings as when it would always take me only a few seconds before — until my latest XP reinstall. Not one suggested solution in all the forums I’ve visited works!

Raymond, any similar easy software for windows vista 64 ? Regards, José Dutra.

first start the pc in safe mode i.e pressing F8 at the startup
and second there you will see many options select enable boot logging and thats all it will save all configurations in your primary partiton i.e c: or whereever you have installed your XP .please reply if this does not works thank you.and keep up the good work.
