You Enjoy Piracy but is it SAFE?

Everyone loves fully licensed software such as Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007, movies in DVD format, albums of MP3, games for computer, XBOX, PS2, PS3, eBooks and comics, ALL FOR FREE! But not many will really support anti-piracy by buying original music albums and DVDs because it’s too expensive! Why pay when you can get it all for FREE?

It’s no doubt that P2P software are the most downloaded softwares in the world in all time. Even though P2P technology is for sharing, but it is widely being used for distributing pirated files. That’s when Anti Piracy companies such as MPAA and RIAA comes in to work. Questions is, are we all still SAFE from piracy?

There has been reports that MPAA and RIAA has infiltrated private torrent sites, uploading fake torrents and setting up fake torrent trackers. When they’ve done all that, they could have gotten maybe millions of IP addresses that’s violated the copyright law. There is a very important information you should know and that is “IT IS NOT SAFE” downloading from torrent or P2P. Latest report says that according to an insider who worked for several anti-piracy organizations, blocklists significantly decrease the risk of getting caught by the MPAA or RIAA. Their main conclusion is a user who is not using blocklist software is practically GUARANTEED to be monitored.
Download PeerGuardian 2
One of the very popular and free blocklist software that provides protection against MPAA or RIAA from monitoring you is PeerGuardian 2. PeerGuardian 2 are free and open source programs developed by Phoenix Labs. They are capable of blocking incoming and outgoing connections based on IP blocklists. Their purpose is to help protect the user’s privacy from organizations such as the RIAA and MPAA while using filesharing networks such as FastTrack and BitTorrent. The system is also capable of blocking advertising, spyware, government and educational ranges, depending upon user preferences.

I’ve discovered this blocklist software many months ago but back then, this software was quite confusing to use. I’ve just downloaded and installed the latest version of PeerGuardian 2, it’s very easy to use.
After installing PeerGuardian 2, you’ll be asked a few questions on the first run. First questions is which range you’ll like to be protected from. By default, only P2P is checked and I believe that’s sufficient. The more you block, the more problems you’re going to face while browsing normal websites.
Protect from RIAA

Next questions is about Automatic Updates. It’s very important to always keep your blocklist up to date otherwise it’s like running an AntiVirus that has old definition. To be on the safe side, select Every day.
Protect from MPAA

Before you get to run PeerGuardian 2, it’ll look for the latest updates on the software and the blocklist. After updating, it will run.
Safely downloading piracy

That’s all you need to do. If you see the PeerGuardian2 tray icon at your traybar blink 3 times, it means PeerGuardian2 is blocking a bad IP range.
PeerGuardian blocking IP

There is an option in PeerGuardian which can block HTTP (website) connections. I noticed that it blocked a lot of websites and resulting the website unable to load. If you encounter this problem, simple click on the “Allow HTTP” button to stop blocking the HTTP. Another method is you can right click on the IP address in the log window and allow the IP manually, PeerGuardian 2 will automatically create a new list for you. The IP address can be allowed for 15 minutes, 1 hour or permanently.

According to an expert in the field, who worked with several anti-piracy organizations, the blocklists contains approximately 75 – 80% of IPs used by the anti-piracy companies he worked with. This means that they offer some protection, but that they’re not foolproof. Well, at least better than nothing.

You speak of trackers, does PeerGuardian 2 cover that?

    • bhargav

well da software seems to suspicious..??????? as detected by my kaspersky anti virus…………….

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

peerguardian 2 can easily include the trackers address. So it can be blocked.

sometimes AV will flag this type of software suspicious but rest assured that peerguardian2 is safe.

    • arachel

hey its open source it was like it since 1.90
second project is protowal on bluetack.co.uk

if you want more lists their origin is bluetack.co.uk

    • arachel

      ps
i do not use kaspersky and i managed to survive

    • Solidusnake

      Thanks!!!

    • creator

i dont understand how these lists are created. I’m not a P2P user myself as the idea of getting caught scares the bejeezuz out of me!
Who creates the list of IP ranges to ignore? Are the leaked by people in the MPAA or RIAA or whoever?
Surely the only other way of knowing is by someone downloading the file, noticing it has a “tracker” in it and then letting everybody else know?
      I’ve always wondered :-)

    • cooldude_i06

Raymond, you should also let people know that only US internet users need to worry about the RIAA and MPAA. People outside the US like us Canadians don’t have to worry about P2P usage at all.

    • arachel

@ creator lists are taken from: ip ranges of organisations that commit to fight piracy; court info, etc

tracker data is worth a shit, we may always say i was using some app to only manipulate tracker – download/ upload info is very easy to spoof

so organisations try to download data from you from their ips to make some court evidence that you upload illegal data

    • creator

so they’re only interested in the people supplying illegal software not downloading it? Or maybe that should be *more* interested in uploaders?

    • nytrydr

so will i be able to download P2P stuff? if ya, how? what connections will i have to allow?

    • nytrydr

what happen if the anit-piracy copanies get my IP Address?

    • nytrydr

woo i jus downloaded a fake torrent (Office 2007) without any guardian software. so if these anti piracy organisations catch me whats gonna happen?

    • omgoshnoway

@ nytrydr, if they catch you they will sue you, and even if you have the best defence attorney in the world you will not win. therefore you will probably have to pay a huge fine[going into millions of US$], and you will have ta spend some time in jail.

    • omgoshnoway

      BITACH

    • arachel

if it is a fake it is one of anti p2p strategies but it is a fake you downloaded and uploaded a fake, it is not any kind of illegal activity its a fake

supplier can get a lot of trouble fine and a jail

      uploader, rather fine – US

    • BigDownloader

There’s no reason to worry. Look around you, see a big city? If you buy their product, they will get even bigger and use their money on new business buildings. I have known internet business brought a cheap land outside the city with cheap property tax to run their new business. If we wouldn’t pay what they asked, they wouldn’t be there. My concern is loss of quiet towns where business had pushed out and continue doing that we had overlooked after many years. Don’t pay them or you too be part of their team. Have they forgotten what cheerful giving means? Get good torrents and enjoy while the worry are theirs. Be safe and use the proper words.

      to ramond:
it blinks as when a packet on port 80 or 443 is blocked. this may impair users ability to surf the internet. tell them how to allow http so noone gets confused.

      to Forgott3n:
yes all the ones suspected of antip2p origin or ones that are compromised(seized)

      to arachel:
all of that is false. peerguardian uses bluetacks lists and has been for a while now. they are kinda partnering but the software that each produce are completely independent of each other.

      to bhargav:
dont pay any attention to those sites, it is just the riaa\\\’s infamous scare tactics

      to hurry:
surely you dont believe that do you? europe is getting pounded by a company called logistep. google em, youll see…

      to ididnotgetanythingelse:
anchorfree is your best choice for free. it is a vpn so it not only hides your ip address but also encrypts your connection so as long your source of internet does not block encrypted connections you can p2p without worry at school or at work without throttling. expect a reasonable drop in performance and you will(of course) be unable to accept incoming connections.
***it works with all connections not just wifi

PG2 is detected by anti virus and anti spyware, because Bluetack, the maker of many PG2 blocklists blacklisted the antivirus update servers, and the av companies got PO’ED and set there programs to detect PG2

You may want to go into the list manager. . . Add . . . URL . . And select some of the BlueTack lists like level1 and level2.

    • EagerDownloader

What about direct downloading from sites like rapidshare?

    • KSiimson

Just use open source software, or you help to keep proprietary software the norm. :P
