The other side of the coin, is that when intellectual rights cease to have a value, advancements will grind to a halt.

Sure enough, it will. But come to think of it, the demand for intellectual rights are high but most are not willing to 'pay' a high price. That is almost as good as low demand as far as the suppliers are concerned. If they were to 'reduce' the price even slightly, it might help to 'boost' the readiness of users to part with their cash for the products. I don't mind developers asking payment for their work but if the price is way too high (unrealistic), surely enough users would resort to piracy. Admittedly, its morally wrong but it's human nature. That is the reason why piracy is still ongoing till this day. You can't blame the pirates alone...
P.S. I am neither a supporter of piracy nor am I against it. I am neutral about it. Like I always say, it is up to the individual. Piracy is a choice...only do it if you are willing to take risks of getting caught.
