Here are two useful sites from where you can get old versions of popular softwares right from it's initial dev builds.

    http://www.oldversion.com/

    http://www.rjamorim.com/rrw/programs.html

Why would someone need old version ?
It's just to see how the app was developed, to experiment with it & most of the earlier versions are portable & very small. So try it. They are very rare to find on net and some are discontinued softwares.
    Hope you'll like it.

You'll be really surprised to see how small apps became bigger bigger & bigger.
    Happy To Help

Apps like utorrent are still lightweight & small. It' still in KB.

µTorrent 1.1.1 (82.5 KB) - the first version

    µTorrent 1.7.7 Stable (214 KB)

    µTorrent 1.8 Release Candidate 6 (260 KB)

It'll stay small forever. At least some software have 'bloatware awareness'. :)

The first Winamp was Winamp 0.2 version (134 KB)
    And now it's Winamp 5.54 (9.08 MB)

Winamp takes so long to load on my pc so i just use windows media player. most of the audio/video i play on it doesn't need a fancy optimizer slowing it down in the background

    I use WMP - only for mp3 & wmv. I listen to music 24x7.
    For avi/divx VLC or MPC.
For HD (.mkv) - I use MPC.
About WMP, I like that mini player in taskbar.

And I have many friends of mine who are very fond of 'GOM Player'. I didn't find anything special about it. May be it's the interface that they like.

It's quite famous. Even I didn't knew about it until very recently.

Also I often use the portable FLV player even though VLC can handle FLV. It's for YouTube downloaded videos. http://www.applian.com/flvplayer/dow...flv_player.php

This is probably the smallest mp3 player that I've ever used (smallest interface).
I think it uses built in windows files to play.

    It's called "MPW.EXE- MP3/Wave Player for Windoze ". Just 40.5 KB.

    Download NOW

While its window has focus, the following keys control the player:

    Up-arrow Volume up
    Dn-arrow Volume down
    P Pause/Play
    N Next track

Just drop files to add to playlist (you can't see it).
