Finnish student goes on rampage killing 10

A student who went on a murderous rampage at a Finnish school on Tuesday, killing 10 people before turning his gun on himself, left behind a note, police said.

The head of the police investigation, Jari Neulaniemi, said the note was found in 22-year-old Matti Juhani Saari's apartment.

"In the note he said he hated mankind and the human race. And that he had been planning this since 2002,'' Neulaniemi said.

The note went on to say "the solution is Walther 22'', a reference to the gunman's Walther .22 calibre handgun, ABC reported

The massacre at the vocational college in Kauhajoki in southwestern Finland was the country's deadliest school shooting and the second in under a year.

Saari, a second-year culinary arts student, stalked the school corridors in a ski mask and black outfit before letting off round after round at helpless students trapped inside a classroom, witnesses and police said.

He then set several fires around the building before shooting himself in the head. He later died of his injuries at a local hospital, police said.

The shooting began about 11am local time on Tuesday and lasted for about an hour and a half.

He may also have been carrying explosives on him, according to the YLE public broadcaster.

Nine of the victims were found in one classroom, while another was discovered in a corridor and Saari had been found in another hallway at the other end of the building, Mr Neulaniemi said.

"We do not know the motive yet, but (the shooting) was done in one classroom," he said, adding that the gunman had also exchanged fire with police.

The school's headmaster Tapio Varmola also said he did not know what had spurred the deadly shooting spree.

"I have no knowledge about a possible motive," he said adding that "because the shooter has died we might never know why he did this".

Finland's Interior Minister, Anne Holmlund, said police had questioned Saari the day before the shooting after he posted a video of himself firing a handgun at a shooting range on the internet.

"The person suspected of being the shooter had posted a video on the internet last Friday where he was shooting at a shooting range," she said.

"Police were aware of this and spoke to him on Monday, September 22. ... However the police officer on duty decided there was no need to terminate his gun licence," Ms Holmlund said, adding that he held a "temporary licence for a .22-calibre gun he obtained in 2008".

It was the Virginia Tech Massacre. It was the most horrific mass murder in the U.S. (I think).

Finland is getting these problems because of Heavy Metal being VERY popular in the country, this kinda music sends dark thoughts into peoples brains, and as it is dark all day (a few months of the year) people get depressed. BTW most of their youth dont have a social life instead they have an online life (social networking profile)

I think some members will frown upon "Heavy Metal" being singled out as a culprit for mass murder.
I refuse to tip toe through life only to arrive safely at death

@ bahirzaheri8: No reflection on you my friend. I presumed you relayed info from an article you read somewhere. Sometimes people are quick to use statistics to prove their own viewpoint whether the statistics is relevant or not. I'll bet you most people who turns out to be mass murderers drinks coffee too. Now would reducing your intake of caffeine also reduce your chances of becoming a mass murderer? I think the same is true for Heavy Metal music and spending a lot of time on the internet.
