Microsoft Security Essentials (beta)

Microsoft today released the Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) beta on microsoft.com/security_essentials (redirects to Microsoft Connect which requires a Windows Live ID). The signing up process for the beta includes a seven-question survey. MSE is the company's free, real-time consumer antimalware solution for fighting viruses, spyware, rootkits, and trojans. The beta is available in English and Brazilian Portuguese for the first 75,000 users, although Microsoft says this is a target number, and it is willing to increase it if necessary. The build number is 1.0.1407.00 (lower than the 1.0.2140.0 leaked build) and it comes in three flavors: for Windows XP 32-bit (7.51MB), for Windows Vista/7 32-bit (4.73MB), and for Windows Vista/7 64-bit (3.73MB). Before downloading, make sure your system satisfies the system requirements:
* For Windows XP, a PC with a CPU with clock speed of at least 500MHz and at least 256MB of RAM
* For Windows Vista and Windows 7, a PC with a CPU with clock speed of at least 1.0GHz and at least 1GB of RAM
* VGA (display): 800x600 or higher
* Storage: 140MB of available hard-disk space
* An Internet connection is required for installation and to download the latest virus and spyware definitions.
Microsoft is planning to release a second public build, either a Beta Refresh or a Release Candidate, in the summer. The software giant is aiming to release the final product in the fall, though it may adjust that based on feedback. After early screenshots leaked and then an actual build leaked, Microsoft decided last week to officially announce MSE.
MSE was previously referred to as codename Morro when Microsoft first revealed it in November 2008. The announcement came as the company surprised everyone by saying it would be phasing out the pay-for Windows Live OneCare in favor of a free security solution. Today's beta release marks Microsoft keeping its promise to have a beta of its new solution available before killing off the old one. Sales of the Windows Live OneCare subscription service as well as Windows Live OneCare for Server on SBS 2008 are scheduled to end at the end of the month.
