Microsoft Security Essentials
As promised, Redmond has released MSE today.
About Microsoft Security Essentials
Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.
Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you’re green, you’re good. It’s that simple.
Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times.
__
*Your PC must run genuine Windows to install Microsoft Security Essentials.

MSE versions are available for 32- and 64-bit Windows XP, Vista and 7.
MSE probably needs a long, hard look, but for a comprehensive security suite from Microsoft ... it may be very late in coming, but it's a freebie option!

@Willem
Fair enough, i'm in the same situation lol. I think i'll stick with avira for the time being and see what everyone else makes of it

Its not that good Ive tested it.
Its still using the same scanning engine as its old Live OneCare and that was crap.
the free Avira>Avast are far better.
Of cause thats only my opinion.

I wish to add that when I tried MSE beta a few months back, it gave my Windows desktop more hassle than benefit. I hastily removed it and kept my hands off it.
While I've read as much good words about MSE final than anything in expectant tech sites over the recent weeks, I'm not ready to deploy it in the only computer system I can lay my hands on.
For the time being, I'm very happy with Avira AntiVir Premium + PC Tools Firewall Plus + PC Tools Spyware Doctor standalone.
However, it doesn't mean I'm gonna close my mind to the possibility of future change.
I'm expecting to learn much more from determined MSE users who can do it, and down the road. That's how I got to know how to pick around for which Avira or PC Tools security software to trust.
The MSE final version could very well be much different from the MSE beta I have tried and tossed off like an ash-covered, live coal .
One thing certain, though, is that commercial security software developers who lived and thrived on dark denizens of the deep abyss created or left neglected by Microsoft over the years are truly displeased by this development.Last edited by Willem; 09-30-2009 at 03:29 AM.

Thanks Willem. I think Microsoft will eventually manage to make headway against vendors as Symantec and McAfee. They have deep pockets, so they can spend a few bucks on it. Personally I will probably stick to Avira.
