First install EASEUS Partition Manager and open it > then right click on F > select Resize/Move > decrease Partition Size to 20 GB > click OK, Apply > then you get some Unallocated space, right click on that and select create.

I'd used EASEUS Partition Manager many times and I'd no problem with that.

    It's not possible with Diskmgmt.msc.

BTW, it's better to defrag HDD before creating new partitions, so that all data is stored at the beginning of the existing partition.

I think this is not possible but you can create a new partition with 5GB space. (like 35 + 5).

Gparted (frm Ubuntu) or Gparted live CD can do tht I guess. Once I had modified NTFS partition using gparted, Windows ran a chkdsk during boot and then everything was fine.

If I was in your place, I'd follow the safest way by arranging an external drive temporarily from any of my friends because 40 GB ain't that big for transferring.

I agree with Prashanthpai because when the drive have data you cannot merge. If the drive full you should copy data to external drive temporarily and then merge. It the safe way !
