Thumb drive encryption?

grrr... I encrypted my work's USB key.

I visit the client, and try to mount the TrueCrypt volume, but TrueCrypt wont run because the user did not have admin privileges....

I'm trying to be smart here by encrypting the files, but it back fired...

Lucky my network account must of had admin access, as I was able to run the exe by running it as me...


Is there a way to use my TrueCrypt volumes without being an Admin ??

I did find this program called TCExplorerv1.6, but that doesn't work with new Truecrypt version.

I doubt it highly. Most programs need admin access or they simply will not work.

Context: encrypting files on usb key, for transfer between computers in a corporate environment.


And the conclusion is: forget about software solutions, and just spend more on a hard-ware solution.

From the looks of it, encrypted usb keys are not main-stream, making them hard to find and expensive to buy...




A simple temp. solution is perhaps to stick to password-protected zip files.

I doubt it would work, most times you do need admin rights to decrypt, I can say that right now without looking at it.

I wouldn't have a clue what else to try. Sorry.

Rohos. You can run it without admin log on, and it can be set to auto launch and has an onscreen keyboard if you're worried about loggers. Free (my favorite).

Especially if all you're carrying around is documents. The free version is limited to around 1g if I'm not mistaken.
As for using truecrypt, it is by far and away the most secure. Best method is to flip the bit of the removable drive using the Lexar USB format tool found here: http://files.filefront.com/lexar+usb.../fileinfo.html

Once you have partitioned the USB drive encrypt one of the partitions and then hide it. Install Truecrypt in traveler mode on the other partition. You still need admin rights to run it, but it is the best way to encrypt flash drives.
