They should focus on Microsoft 'Midori' rather than Windows 8. The 'shiny heavy black' style Operating systems have no bright future.

may be they are scared of windows 7 will be as bad as vista, so they are announcing windows 8 first so we the users will think "oh there is still windows 8, lets wait" if 7 really comes out crap..

Microsoft is going to repeat its mistake with Vista yet again by-

*Shipping Windows 7 in 6 Different versions.
*Building Windows 7 over the core of Vista. A new and revolutionized Core would have been better but its all too late now. They've just tried to FIX Vista in Windows 7.
*Preserving the Same Aero UI in Windows 7 as well. Most of the people with problems in Vista complain about Aero which sucks up all the memory. Why not switch to a familiar interface like the "Human" GUI in Ubuntu?
*Keeping up the Price tag of Windows 7 still very high which will encourage even more piracy especially in the developing countries and that too in the times of Economic recession.

Phew. if I were at MS, I wouldn't start thinking think about Windows 7 or Microsoft Midori so soon as yet.

I've already switched to Linux although I still have Windows on my HDD. And yes, if MS fail this time, it'll be the time to switch to the alternatives.

M$ plans on releasing a new OS every three (3) years, which is actually a lot slower than either MAC or Ubuntu.
The bottom line on upgrading to Win7 is this: if you are upgrading from Vista, everything should go well, if you are upgrading from XP, expect the same problems you would have expected going from XP to Vista. Backwards compatability is NOT in the picture. They are designing OSes for new hardware, not yesteryear's hardware. Programs which have not adapted themselves to Vista yet, will NOT work on Win7 either.
Surveys of IT mgrs show that within one year of release, over half of M$ machines will be on Win7. Less than 6% are looking at non-MS alternatives. The main reason is that most have proprietary software that was designed for MS compatability. As always, enterprise users will continue to have MS, Mac, Unix/Linux, SPARC, etc. etc., but the backbone of their business will continue to use MS because it fulfills more of their needs than any other system can.

I've seen different surveys, Polkadot, that says the reverse. That ITs going to go to open source alternatives due to the economic crisis as well as the stability of the OSs.
