    Protection for 512 Mb laptop

    Hello.

Normally i am using archlinux with no antivirus but my mother don't like linux OS so i installed her laptop genuine xp home sp3.

Problem: 512 Mb ram and AMD Sempron 3600.

Which security is best? I m thinking Eset 4 Antivirus. Is it light for system resources?

I would also recommend avast since it is light, reliable and updates its virus database automatically even with slow internet connection.

I personally prefer Avira over Avast, but that's just me. I think that Avast is more reliable but has a good amount of false positives.

Avast or Avira, and Comodo for Firewall.

Offtopic, how is Arch? I've never tried it myself, I hear it's harder to set up at first but once it's set up, it's easy to run.
pacman -Syyu life not found in sync db

I'm getting very proficient in Terminal/ console, so I'll check it out sometime Do you know if you still need to know every piece of equipment in your computer? I'm a lazy user but know a good amount. I heard YUM is a good way of installing, better then apt-get with Ubuntu.

most annoying thing about AVAST is that RMDB or whatever its caled. It runs and makes copies of all your system files 3 versions back in case you have to restore a file. its a good feature tho and can be set to run on idle or not at all.

Avira i have not tried but avast gets my vote

only thing is i had Avast pro and if it detected a bad file bieng downloaded it just broke the internet connection. That may have jsut been the pro version and i never figured out how to get around that lol. But as for free Avast gets my vote. But most of your free AV's will get false positives. Search Rays blog he tested SEVERAL free AV's. See if this helps

    http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/...-memory-usage/

According to that post PC tools AV free edition 4 uses 5m in idle and 24 during scan but cannot detect private trojans Avast uses like 60m during scan. Read that post most freebies cannot detect a private trojan

I am suprised you have an activation key for Xp still. mine ran out long ago and really i need to reinstall it

@ hellnoire get everest ultimate and generate a report of EVERYTHING running on your pc. That is a rocking soft

I would go for Avira. Avast just takes too long to scan my PC. After 3 hours, it is only at 38% during full scan.
Thoughts are like a never ending ocean where it is deep, endless and dangerous
