    Since the computer can start up and you can see the XP loading screen, try booting in to safe mode.

    i remember that happening to me along while back on windows 98 i think but cudda been xp.

    i think it had something to do with explorer.exe being corrupt/not loading .. does that sound feasible to anyone.

    apart from that at the moment all i can say is failure comes bundled with windows im affraid.

    it's quantum i think. i can boot into safe mode always but normal boot sometimes fails. according to the hd checker my pc's hd is ok. i haven't turned it off since morning because it might not boot up again

    boot it in safe mode ,then open cmd type chkdsk c: /f
    then reboot normal and let it check disk

    quantum hds made by seagate ,i have a 6gb seagate quantum laying around
