Considering that about half of the apps now do not support 64bit, and most that do, do not take advantage of it, that would be a big step for M$. In designing an OS, you need to look towards the future, but not leap-frog over the existing user base of apps. Am I going to buy a 128bit machine/OS when half of the apps still do not work on 64b? Not likely. Enterprise is where M$'s big bucks lie. Enterprise is currently not buying new equipment, nor are they in a hurry to buy W7. If there is not backwards compatibility, it would quickly become M$'s next major failure.

Exactly Polkadot, that's what I was thinking. Most people use the i386 processors, aka 32 bit processors... 64 is barely being supported now... they're just shooting themselves in the head, much like the MPAA is with BluRay, forcing us to adopt... backlash city anyone?

    Interesting !

This news is interesting because we always thought Windows 7 would be the last release that had 32-bit and 64-bit versions. This was brought on by the fact that Windows Server 2008 R2, the server version of Windows 7, was the first Windows Server release to be 64-bit only. The next client version of Windows should therefore follow suit, but apparently Microsoft is going to prepare it for 128-bit as well. We're not saying Windows 8 will definitely come in 64-bit and 128-bit flavors, but Microsoft is moving down that path, and at the very least, Windows 9 will.

the only advantage could be that viruses makers will have a hard time with 128-bit Windows operating systems, I think.

I know that is not comforting
