Hi all,
my friend, Joe can't go to normal Windows, but is stuck over the Welcome screen.
She has tried to go to Safe Mode, but of no luck.
So, this morning I came to help her. I brought my USB HDD of 40GB capacity, hoping to save her data in Drive D by using this command under the black dark screen environment:
copy D:\* E:\saved_data\
but the system just said "the system cannot find the drive specified".
Any ideas?

Have you created "saved_data" folder? If it's not created, you must use the MD command to create the folder.
Copy D:\* will only copy FILES in D drive. Folders will NOT be copied.
For a more powerful copy, use xcopy.

By what ways can I know the exact drive letter the
system assigned to my USB HDD, Raymond?

Can you let me know how do you get in to "black dark screen environment"?

Can Windows PE help in this case?

It won't load USB drivers, that's why it couldn't find your USB HDD.
It's much easier to use Windows PE. You can boot up Windows XP from CD or USB flash drive.. then plug in your USB HDD, and copy all the files to it.
I use UBCD4Win to create a bootable Windows from CD. Easy to use...

Another question here,
I got a XP installation CD on hand, and
I heard that the disc sometimes can be helpful for corrupted windows
because it bears Repair function.
Could you please let me know how to use this repair function, Raymond?

kwfine, ubcd4win contains it's own Windows XP. You can even boot it up on a computer without a hard disk. So you can definitely boot UBCD4WIN on any OS.
To tell you the truth, I've only used the Repair function once when HP telephone support asked me to. It sort of like re-installing Windows on top of a corrupted Windows. Just follow the on-screen instructions.
