Thread: Screen Blank
- 07-04-2007 #1
Well my friend needs some help. Half his screen is just blank. He got a new graphics card, but he doesn't know what happened. I'll get more info, but does someone know why this is happening? Anyways its a german computer so many of the normal commands don't work. He can't access the start menu and to go to the Control Panel, you have to go from My Documents to My Computer to Control Panel. I already suggested the position of the screen.

Half of his screen is blank? That's something new to me!
Usually it's either there is display or not. I'd suggest him to take out the card and put it back again. Maybe the card did not seat on the slot correctly.

Thats what me and my friend who was helping him said. He couldn't access many things so it was VERY difficult to test anything. Any downloads that could detects problems with the card?

Could very well be defective video card, that would probably make the most sense (that is if you didn't have this problem before the new video card).
Can you describe the problem better? Like, HOW is the screen split? (Horizontal/Vertical), or anything else like that?

what about the monitor did you check it maybe some inputs on it are messed up

Well nothing is put it wrong. He described the screen as if you can see part of it but the rest is a 'void', but your mouse can still go there. He often complained of his mouse getting 'lost' in the void. Its cut off both horizontally and vertically so you can only see part of it. But its enough to go and do stuff. Like check emails, download stuff...etc. He already went to a store to get it fixed but instead the 'void' became bigger.

Err... one stupid question.
Did he try adjusting his monitor? Like expanding it?

Yea I already told him stuff like that, like positioning your screen and expanding..etc.

You said that he upgraded his video card. Does he still have the old video card? If he does, tell him to see if the problem still occurs after he puts in the old card. If all is well with the old video card, then you know it's some sort of hardware problem with the new video card.

Usually a nice punch to the side of the monitor fixes that problem just nicely for me ;)
