I have this problem in "help and support center" and it is driving me crazy.
within a month I reformatted my pc four times to solve this problem.
when I click on related topics in "help and support center", instead of getting a pop up window, the "notes" icon is duplicated with each click.
The index is marked with a red x.
I tried all the methods I found out there in the internet. I even re built help and support center. yesterday the help and support center suddenly worked by itself. (I was lucky enough to create a system restore point before shutting down the computer).
Today, the help and support center stopped working again. the index shows as a red x, and the related topics pop up windows stopped showing up.
ok, I hit the restore system key and the help and support center is working normally now.
please Raymond, I need to know what is causing this? I need a once and for all solution or anything that sheds light on this.
my windows is: xp home sp2 - didn't install sp3 yet.
    internet explorer 6 sp2 128 bit
    I have avast anti virus
    spyware blaster
    spybot search and destroy
    windows defender
    any help is appreciated.

Question is, do you really need the Help & Support Center? I mean, c'mon, give it a rest. You'll find way better solutions to your problems via Google than by using the stupid Microsoft Help System. I've yet to find it useful. In order to disable it, just go to:

Run (WinKey+R) > Type "services.msc" > Find Help & Support Center > Change the Startup type to "disabled" > Apply > OK
    Enjoy a world without help.

    hey mEtRiX
I don't want to enjoy a world without help..
it is not a matter of the "help and support' itself, I want to know what is causing this problem. I can't just ignore it. it could be something bigger than the index with a red x..
you remind me of a story..
a man went to a barber shop to cut his hair. the barber was busy so he asked one of his new boys to take care of the man. the boy was just begining to learn how to cut hair, so he injured the man, the man screamed, the barber got angry and raised his hand to slap the boy. the boy stepped aside and the barber's hand hit the man. then the boy continued what he was doing, again he injured the man and the man yelled, and again when the barber tried to slap the boy his hand landed on the man's neck. once again the boy continued what he was doing, this time he found the ear of the man in his hand, but the man didn't scream or jump, instead he whispered to the boy: quick, get rid of it, don't let your boss see it...
well... I don't want to get rid of that ear... and pretend that it never existed...
still waiting for your help... to help me know what is stopping my help (all of a sudden) from helping me...
