For me 3 minutes is a lifetime but I guess it is not extraordinary long. You can start up your system without login. Just go to control panel, user accounts and edit your account to not request a password. If you like to be on the save side and have sensitive info on your PC, this is not advisable.

The first thing would be to disable programs that you do not need to start automatically, then you can set the windows services which you don't need to start automatically to start manually, defrag your hard disk on a regular basis, regularly run CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/download or other program to fix issues in your registry, set your computer to use resources for best performance. Anvir Taskmanager free is a good utility to use in order to remove programs from the start up list and it also has a number of other cool features. You can download it at http://www.anvir.com/download.htm

can you explain in a bit of detail how to disable auto start programs or maybe a link to the procedure. is there a risk of me turning something off that then won't let me boot up?

The easiest way is to use Anvir Taskmanager. When you run it, one of the tabs (Startup) will list all the programs which automatically start when you boot windows. In order to remove it from the startup list you simply clear it's check box. As long as you don't disable essential windows services (which anyway is not listed in Anvir under Startup) you will not have a problem in booting.

You must remember that the more space you use on your hard disk (ie. the more programs you install) will have a negative effect on startup times, unless you do some tweaking. The protection on your PC is not to bad so I don't think it is malware. What I do know is that Panda take a lot of resources and I bet if you disable it you will see a marked improvement.
