HP 530 Power Up Password lost...
My friend hasn't used his 530 laptop for some time and now the password is lost. Have tried removing batteries, unplugging jumper cables and even tried an alternative BIOS boot disk.
Nothing has worked so far and HP are not interested, or else will charge a fortune to issue a password or solution to the problem.
Can anyone guide me through this process...?

Those branded PCs has a pretty special method of not allowing users to hack the bios password by removing the battery or resetting the bios jumper. Unfortunately I couldn't find other method of reseting the BIOS password other than calling HP and pay them to do it.

What bios version do you have,Award , pheonix, ami. Some bioses have a flash bios program that can be down loaded from the web site it does a better job of resetting things.I hope this was helpfull.

Can you try to reinstall the OS?

Reinstalling the OS won't reset the bios password.

Recently I was having a similar problem. Tried the usual with the CMOS battery to no avail.
I removed the main battery and hard disc. Downloaded and installed to a floppy disc from HP, the BIOS for the operating system I was going to install which was XP Pro. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...nvOID=1093#120
Connected an external floppy drive and mains adapter and booted the computer. I was asked if I wanted to replace BIOS dated..... with BIOS dated....... Yes. Make sure you do not touch laptop while this is in operation. It might take some time to do. When the replacement BIOS had been loaded I could boot into the BIOS with no problem. Inserted the hard disc and installed my operating system.

So flashing the BIOS will remove the bios password?

When you reprogram a cmos the data stored must be compliant with the new version of the bios being flashed. So all data on the BIOS is reset when the programming is complete.

After re reading your post, the though had occurred to me that some systems have a BIOS Password and an HDD Password that is BIOS controlled. My Dell Latitude X300 is like this. It has a Phoenix bios. Are you Sure it isn't an HDD password?
The reason I ask is because the only method I am aware of is to Reflash the HDD with the Original firmware, or send the drive back to the Manufacturer to have the HDD BIOS password reset.
The Bugger of all of this is that the security of the BIOS and the HDD integrate. The HDD takes on the Digital Signature of the Bios and forces the BIOS to request the password from the HDD on Bootup, Pretty ingenious method if I do say so myself. Its quite dificult to repair without the HDD tools to reset the HDD.
I found This nice little tidbit of information that might assist you as well, they speak about what i was just saying but in more detail.
