Thread: Crash & Break
- 09-27-2007 #1
Hi,
My computer crashed and now it won't turn on anymore. This is how it happened, I had nothing but microsoft Word and internet running when my computer suddenly froze, then I restarted it and after 1-2 hours it crashed. The screen turned black but the computer was still running (like sleep mode). Then I resated it again because nothing was responding, not CTRL+ATL+DEL not even ESC. The same thing happening again after 1 hour. This time I didn't do anything I just left it in the hope that it may recover. I came back to check on it after a while and it was turned off. When I tried switching it on it starts up for just about 1sec then cuts. I opened it up and check if everythign was plugged in properly. I am not an expert but I know that it all looks fine. Now everytime I try switching it on the fan starts spinning for just 1second and then stops and nothign else.
What do I do? Did I fry my computer? I have tonnes of work saved on it. I can't transfer the data into another computer.
Thanks
M

I've seen this problem before. 90% of the time is your power supply.
As for not using it for an hour and then it shuts off, it can be caused by overheating. Check the fans on your processor and also your power supply. Once there was a lizard died and stuck at the fans in power supply. The fan would not spin and PSU overheated. The PSU didn't fry and it's smart enough to auto turn off.

what do you mean by the power supply? I tried plugging it else where and it still does the same thing. Btw, I didn't hear any beep noise (that only happens when I restart the computer)... I'm not sure what you mean by check the fans on your processor. I checked both fans and they seem to start and stop at the same time. oh, and I normally use a multi suckecy (plug thing)... could it be the problem?
Thanks a bunch!

Power Supply Unit (PSU) is on every computer. Check at the back of your computer. It should look something like the picture below.

Yeah I've check that and the fan starts to spin but stops... so you're telling me to get myself a new one of those and replace it with teh current one. Do I need a specific one, are there compatibility issues or anything thing like that to that into consideration?
Thanks again

There's a very high chance that it's the power supply. If possible, get one to try first. Best get the same or higher Watt Output Capacity.
As long as you don't use a smaller one
