Well, currently, you're also out of date too The new one is 9.04, but I'll tell you how to fix it for 8.10

First and foremost, let's go to Synaptic, which is under System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager, then go
    Code:
    edit, repair broken packages
If that doesn't work, fire up Terminal, which is in Applications>Accessories>Terminal and typing

    Code:
    sudo dpkg --configure -a
    -OR-
    sudo apt-get install -f
The other thing you've got to watch out for is if you've got all the repos activated. I didn't show how to do that, but basically, go to Add/Remove under Programs, and change it to the top one, which should be basically All Programs, then close it.

Failing all this, we'll do a manual install of nVida's drivers. Download them here then follow this step-by-step:
    Code:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=514161&highlight=install+nvidia
After all this, if it's still being a fish out of water,
    Code:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1004945
should have some more ideas. You'll notice a lot of what I've said here is what's said there for the first page (it's common install tricks), but by the looks of it, they did get it working. Best of luck and hope it works for you. Let me know if it doesn't though.

Sounds like they haven't updated it to the Ubuntu 8.10, wonderful :/

Did you check out the forum link too? Or did that not work too?

Either way, I see now why ATI is considered stable for Linux and nVidia isn't.

Why not posting on their forums? I know a lot about Linux but I'm not a know-all of Linux. So I would think that would help you.

Yumeng... that version is WELL over two years old now. If you have to compare that to now, we've got issues.

I myself started with 7.10 and it was a nightmare for me. But I persisted... when 8.04 came out.

As for the CD, it's a very simple: yes, yes they are.
