Well, currently, you're also out of date too
The new one is 9.04, but I'll tell you how to fix it for 8.10
First and foremost, let's go to Synaptic, which is under System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager, then goIf that doesn't work, fire up Terminal, which is in Applications>Accessories>Terminal and typingCode:edit, repair broken packages
The other thing you've got to watch out for is if you've got all the repos activated. I didn't show how to do that, but basically, go to Add/Remove under Programs, and change it to the top one, which should be basically All Programs, then close it.Code:sudo dpkg --configure -a -OR- sudo apt-get install -f
Failing all this, we'll do a manual install of nVida's drivers. Download them here then follow this step-by-step:After all this, if it's still being a fish out of water,Code:http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=514161&highlight=install+nvidia
should have some more ideas. You'll notice a lot of what I've said here is what's said there for the first page (it's common install tricks), but by the looks of it, they did get it working. Best of luck and hope it works for you. Let me know if it doesn't though.Code:http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1004945

after accepting the license agreement, I got the following msg
No precompiled kernel intereface was found to matching you kernel would you like the installer to attemtp to download a kernel interface for your kernel form NVIDIA ftp site ..
I selected yes, press enter
got the msg.
No matchng precompiled kernel interface was found on NVIDIA ftp site
then
builing kernel moddule 1% .......100% It went upto 100% and thrown this msg
ERROR: unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module
ERROR: intaller failed...
and then it came back to command prompt
Thanks for your help, hope I'm able to get this drivers are installed

Sounds like they haven't updated it to the Ubuntu 8.10, wonderful :/
Did you check out the forum link too? Or did that not work too?
Either way, I see now why ATI is considered stable for Linux and nVidia isn't.

I have checked and tried what was there on the forum link also , unfortunately that didn't work either
hope it get solved in foreseeable future.

Why not posting on their forums? I know a lot about Linux but I'm not a know-all of Linux. So I would think that would help you.

just a question are they serious about the offer of sending you a free copy of ubuntu? has someone really received one? just wanted to know..

Yes, they are serious. I received that CD many times.

Seriously, i used Ubuntu 7.04 on the past, i feel it does not suit for me.
As for the CD, they send CD for free, no fake.

Yumeng... that version is WELL over two years old now. If you have to compare that to now, we've got issues.
I myself started with 7.10 and it was a nightmare for me. But I persisted... when 8.04 came out.
As for the CD, it's a very simple: yes, yes they are.
