Ubuntu has Wubi feature which allows you to install Ubuntu like any other Windows application. As for Puppy you can't install it through windows.

Screw Google! Ask me!

Ubuntu's the one and only one I know of that would be able to install via Windows.

There's this nifty program called PLoP. You could just burn that to a CD one-time and then just boot USBs whenever you want from it regardless if your BIOS supports it or not.

I've read that there are netbook OS ditros that can be installed via Windows...most of them are based on Ubuntu and Wubi though just for the info.
Example: Jolicloud
Puppy? I don't think so...
In any case, you can always try Linux distros on a virtual machine in Windows....just download VirtualBox, install it and use it. No need to waste CDs trying out Linux distros (you're gonna waste a lot of $$$ if you do that)
Or you can go with what brayden just linked...I've not tried that myself so I dare say nothing more on it.They call me the mysterious one...

VMware is better in my opinion as it does hardware level virtualization which can improve performance usually. Also, if he has pretty poor system specifications then it'd be bad to run in VirtualBox or VMware as it'll tear up his PC like it does to me for running 2 at the same time. I'm too lazy to integrate the server and the desktop installs of Debian into one

It just boots up (if you get the right version) it's a tiny ISO you could probably fit on a floppydisk and it will detect all the devices connected to your PC and give you the option to boot one of them. Doesn't always work however as one of my friends couldn't get it to work. Might be because of his RAID array or his oldish computer is just bad.
