Yep it's possible. For me, I'd install Windows XP first, leaving half of the hard disk space for linux partition. Then install Linux and it will detect that you have Windows XP.

You must resize your Windows partition to leave some free space. Hiren's BootCD has a tool called "The Partition Resizer" which you can use to resize your current Windows partition.
Then just pop in your linux CD and boot up with it. Installing linux nowadays is much easier compared to many years ago where everything is done manually.

Ray, i tried that one last year, but after installing the Ubuntu, i have no idea how to boot on my Windows XP, there is no boot screen, but i can see the files were still there since I can browse on the partitioned HDD where the Windows XP was installerd.

Wouldn't running a live CD be easier?

live CD? what's that? can you explain to me further?

A live cd or usb executes on boot without having to install it on your hard drive. It does not alter the OS or files on the hard drive unless you instructs it to. The aim of a live cd/usb is to be able to run a OS and return the computer to its original state when you shut it down. It places the the files that normally would be installed on the hard drive into RAM (typically a RAM disk), by doing so it does however cut back on the RAM availability to programs and obviously will influence the performance somewhat.
In my opinion this is the ideal if you want to learn Linux as you don't have to partition your hard drive. If you then at a later stage decide that you like it you can then install it on your hard drive as a second operating system.
