ISP Disconnection Monitoring.
Hi Friends,
My ISP, cable modem keeps disconnecting frequently. I spoke to the ISP, but they are always looking into the problem.
Is there a software or a way that would log in the time when my connection goes dead and to log in the time when the connection comes back so that I could give them a log of disconnection to convince them ?.
Thanks !
Shajan.

Try PingLog.
http://www.securitysoftware.cc/Programs/Pinglog.exe
Some of my clients had intermittent connectivity problems with their ISP. The support guys kept coming out but never found a problem. (Funny how it always worked when they were there.) I wrote this program to create detailed logs of the connectivity problems. Their attitude changed as soon as I sent them the log.

Thank you Raymond for the link and reply. Just another query, should I ping the ISPs Default Gateway or DHCP server ? Thanks, Shajan.

re:
1) whats your ping stats to your'e isp's gateway router. Any packet loss?
How is your modem connected?
------------------------
There are many reasons that could develop this disconnection. Post the ping stats here.

Hi, the ping status to the gateway router are as follows:
(6:14 AM): bytes=32 time=12ms TTL=255
(6:15 AM): bytes=32 time=10ms TTL=255
(6:16 AM): bytes=32 time=12ms TTL=255
(6:17 AM): bytes=32 time=12ms TTL=255
(6:18 AM): bytes=32 time=102ms TTL=255
(6:19 AM): bytes=32 time=11ms TTL=255
Thanks worklife.

112ms
At count 6, there is a high of 102ms..
1)How is the modem connected through a router or are you sharing it through an "os"?
2) did you try changing the ethernet cable?

You should ping a reliable server such as www.google.com

hmm
Your isp should be wise enough to run a dump on your connection?
Which isp are you with?

worklife: its Hathway in Bangalore, India. It is a direct connection through a cable, just a single PC and no sharing too.
Raymond: thanks, will do that.

Shajan: What does Hathway's Technical Dept report to you about this issue.
Ask them if you can run a network protocol analyzer, such as "Wireshark" on windows or "Tcpdump" on linux to further investigate this issue.
