I was wondering, if two computers on the same LAN have the messenger service disabled, is there another way to send a message to the other computer without the use of 3rd party software?

If it is a normal peer-to-peer LAN network, then I don't think it's possible.
When XP was released, the messenger service was enabled by default... This has caused another wave of spam via netsend spoof.

I'm afraid it's impossible, my friend. You should just re-enable the Messenger service and use this cool, freeware program.
