Thread: Upgrade from XP to Win7
- 10-07-2009 #11
I'm using the 7600 Win7Ulti and its working really good. No bugs just some unimportant drivers incompatibility and some lovely apps not working properly: Unlocker, Netcut and Daemon.. Do you guys notice the XP Mode of Windows 7? I think the application issue wont be a problem again in the future and more people will go with 7.

It is still beta though that is available for download. The RTM has been finalized and to be released on 22nd Oct but I don't think I need to give hint on how to try now.

$60 isn't that bad... besides, all you'd need is the $20 version, one time use upgrade... after that, you keep with what you've got.

Buy Win7 Pro or better and you can install XP mode.
It's specifically designed to make running older programs easier without problems.

- 10-08-2009 #17Study: Windows 7 can boot more slowly than VistaAlthough Windows 7 has been praised for loading and shutting down faster than prior versions, according to one software company, in many cases the new operating system can take longer to get started than Windows Vista.
Iolo Technlogies, which sells PC tune-up software, said its lab unit found that a new machine running Windows 7 takes one minute and 34 seconds to become usable, as compared to one minute and six seconds for Windows Vista. Iolo said it measured not the time it takes for the desktop to appear — which can be as little as 40 seconds on a fresh installation of Windows 7 — but rather the time it takes to become fully usable, "with CPU cycles no longer significantly high and a true idle state achieved".

Seriously? Wow... they really don't know much, because it's a lot faster, really. There's just minor changes I've had to make it do... and that's not a fully usable start if you ask me, because I never wait that long
Boot time to the desktop is what I consider more important, and 7 beats Vista hands down at that.

so i assume ur hardware is the same or equivalent (its illegal to compare 10.000 rpm for seven with 7200 rpm or 5400 rpm hdd for vista LOL) and ur comparing 7 rtm with vista sp2 right? because 7 rtm is faster than vista rtm for SURE but i am not certain about current vista build... there's also a buzz that 7 rtm is now slower than beta and rc (the one i have) and 'minor' tweaks like super-fast-booting are also not allowed... so some specs please. hands down what is faster is never to shutdown

No, I'm comparing the same speed hardware, with Windows 7 Final, with Windows Vista Final SP2.
What I've got on my laptop...
1.66 Ghz Dual Core processor
Intel onboard video card
250 gig 7200 rpm HDD
3 Gig DDR1 RAM
and Windows 7 actually has more on boot then Vista did. Vista only had Online Armour, ESET AV, and Winpatrol. Everything else was set to a minute delay, if not longer.
Windows 7 has: Winpatrol, ESET Internet Security, Rainmeter, Rainlender, Proxy Switcher, Persistance, and Synaptics (two driver installs). So I can honestly say the "slow down" rumour is a load of bunk, and is just a rumour. It took nearly 50 seconds for Vista to boot with what I've listed, 7 takes about 35 seconds.
As for shutdowns, they both take about 20 seconds... it was always fast to shut down, I found.
