I am considering doing a dual boot, with windows XP and windows 7. Some of the programs I have installed in XP are a few years old and I was wondering if they might cause conflicts in windows 7. If they don't already, most software vendors will have versions for windows 7 available in the near future.

Win7 will upgrade from either XP, or Vista. The installed programs will not appear, but there is a folder "Windows.old", where, unless you did a clean install instead of an upgrade, all of your programs have been saved.

My advice: stay on XP for another 2-3 years. Too many variables with Win 7: drivers, apps, ...you name it!

Drivers, not so much. 7 detected a lot of what I ran fine. As for Apps, only Alcohol 120% doesn't work.

If U say so... .I didn't have win7 , but after Vista disaster I'll stick with the "old" good XP. Maybe I'll try a dual boot to see what's going on!

They clearly rushed Windows7 forwards, because they don't earn much on XP licenses after they had to lower the price of it in order not to loose marketshare to Linux. Because of that there may still be a few bugs, yes.

I'm using Windows 7 Professional right now guys. I see no bugs, and there have been no bugs arise from what I've seen.

same here with 7 ultimate but only difference i can see regarding vista sp1/2 is a transparent taskbar... both have more or less same speed no apparent bugs or issues with drivers... xp on the other hand still seems the faster of them all and that is confirmed by testing... so if you are looking for speed stay with XP forever. personally i dont intend to upgrade neither my vista neither my xp machines.
