I have an old PC on which I would like to install Xandrox so I could have a first-time "fiddle" with Linux. Something went wrong during installation and I wish to format the drive to try another version of Linux. To save the trouble of removing the HDD to put into my main PC for the sake of formatting, is there a program I can find and burn to floppy...or CD...which will allow me to format this drive?

You don't need to remove the HDD and put it on another PC just to format the drive. Most of the linux installation disc should be able to format the drive when you pop in the linux disc for installation.

Raymond...the Xandros CD I have starts up OK, then after it completes hardware inspection, screen goes black, HDD and CD ROM stop "whirring" and a number of LEDs on the monitor start flashing. I let this continue for 30 minutes or so hoping the installation was proceeding, but with no HDD activity, I assumed something had gone amiss. I'll get another copy and try again, hopefully with better results! As you suggest, the disk should be formatted during the installation process. Thanks again for your help.

Hmm.. maybe it doesn't support one of your hardware? Try other linux distro such as SLAX.

Thanks Raymond. Before I read your previous comment, I had found Ubuntu 7.10, and it loaded just fine. All I have to do now is learn to "drive it"!! Thanks again.

Ubuntu is nice too. A good distro to start learning Linux.
