I'm afraid 8.3 DOS names cannot be converted into NTFS long names without knowing the previous names. May be Nero had a list of names associated with each file.

What prashanthpai said is right. You still couldn't restore the backed up files even after trying to load the files one by one?

Thanks a lot guys for all your help. I guess I will have to struggle through the long process of defining and sorting. You guys have helped immensely.

    Thanks again, Richard.

I backed up 2GB of files from a pen drive with nero backitup. After the restoration, at least 3 files became corrupt (Before the restoration they were intact).

I know that entire partition or drive imaging software like with Norton Ghost is useful.
But, I don't understand the use of some backup programs like Nero as I don't use any.
If it is compression that matters, then one can use any archive format and copy the files manually to backup location.
Backup using softwares is necessary mostly in servers where there are different ways like incremental, differential backups etc.
