Rising Antivirus 2008
Does anyone know the difference, if any, between Rising AV and Rising AV free??? I browsed the web and the manufacturer's site but found myself unable to detect any difference whatsoever. The information they provide is in fact extremely meagre on this point, and secondary download sites as Tucows apparently have no idea either.
As to its technical performance, Rising AV (the version I downloaded and installed for free) seems unable to perform any updates as long as you are working in a limited user account (i.e. without administrative privileges which I usually do). If you try to do it manually from there, the program starts to collect information, only to end with a pop-up window declaring "Now opdate", in which "Now" stands for 'No' = nihil (as can be gathered from the additional phrase "Try again later").
As matters stand I start to have some misgivings whether it will be wise to continue using the program, in spite of the words of praise by Raymond, and in spite of the fact that some of the program's features are impressive indeed.
Or is it just my ignorance ??
Apologies, I see now that there is an old thread on this, and perhaps I should have opened this thread in another section (that of Antivirus software). So, my ignorance, yes.
Even so, the question of the difference between the two versions remains unclear to me, and perhaps someone can help me out.
The other point -the 'defective' update feature- this is of course a problem for all AVV: allowing to update a program launched in a limited account makes the definition files in principle more vulnerable to attacks from other programs. There should however be other ways to solve it. It is time consuming (and annoying) if in order to update you must first log in as an administrator, and then switch to a limited account.Last edited by Kees; 12-24-2008 at 06:11 AM. I believe the difference in the two versions lie in real-time protection. The paid version of Rising Antivirus will definitely have real-time virus defense. The free version of Rising Antivirus only has on-demand scanning, I believe, and only has manual updates, while the paid version of Rising Antivirus has automatic updating. I also believe that the paid version would have more defense features than the free version.

Rising has a free firewall, too, which you can download seperately. The firewall can hardly be the difference between the paid and the free version.
The free version also has realtime protection.
In the interface (of the free version) you can set the update to automatic, but I don't know whether this works properly, because the program will not update in a limited useraccount anyway

I checked it:
Rising AV Free does update automatically when logged in on a administrator account (provided you choose the right setting), though it takes it time to start.
Rising AV Free does not slow down your PC significantly. I am using it on an old Pentium 4, 1,7 G with 512 Mb, XPSP3 and it runs fine.
