Kaspersky Rescue CD update database...
Read about several Rescue CDs explained here:
http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/...t-rescue-disk/
Decided to use Kaspersky Rescue CD.
Downloaded the ISO from here:
http://devbuilds.kaspersky-labs.com/...ds/RescueDisk/
Burnt the CD, etc.
To my understanding this is a Linux based CD, and it is running on a Windows XP machine before it boots into Windows. The connection is not wireless.
However, no matter what is tried, it will not update the database.
In the Update tab, Kaspersky labs, etc. is checked, and also, Automatically update is checked.
Is there anything else that can be done to have it update?
Latest ISO is dated 7 May 2009. Does that contain the latest definitions as of that date, and is it the only option?
Thanks for your help.Last edited by Canard blanc; 06-27-2009 at 05:53 AM.

I have a guide where you can turn a rescue ISO into a bootable USB drive.
It is for the BitDefender ISO (works great!) but you can put the Kaspersky ISO or any other on it.
How to create a Rescue USB

Thank you for your reply, evilfantasy!
I did use UNetbootin and created a USB drive with Kaspersky. You can also use it for BitDefender, and for DrWeb LiveCD.I have a guide where you can turn a rescue ISO into a bootable USB drive.
Booted from it, no problems, etc. However, when the need to update the Kaspersky virus database comes up, have had no luck at all!!
That is the issue - can't update.
Any ideas on this one?

I haven't tried the Kaspersky ISO with the USB but was able to update using the BitDefender ISO.
As long as you have the most recent ISO available then you should have all of the current updates. Not sure though.

Does your network has DHCP service that automatically gives out IP address without the need of manually configuring IP addresses?
It is possible that it's a very new computer and the linux that Kaspersky Rescue CD is using doesn't support the network card.

@evilfantasy
That is exactly my thought. As long as you have the most recent ISO available then you should have all of the current updates. Not sure though.
However, the ISO is about a month old. All sorts of new virus definitions are out...
@Raymond
Thank you for your reply, also!
Yes to the above.Does your network has DHCP service that automatically gives out IP address without the need of manually configuring IP addresses?
Tried it on three computers; two laptops and one Desktop. They are all a good couple of years old.It is possible that it's a very new computer and the linux that Kaspersky Rescue CD is using doesn't support the network card.
However, on whether the network card is supported by the version of Linux used by Kaspersky Rescue CD...your guess is as good as mine on this one. Have a netbook EeePC with Linux Xandros installed, and I use Mint 7, Fedora, and Eeebuntu on it also (not all at the same time, of course). These distros work OK, but run something like Knoppix, or some other distro, and you can forget about the Internet connection.
Although that could be the issue, thought that Kaspersky used a new, and customized build of Gentoo Linux, that is automatically supposed to detected the hardware, connect to the network, etc.?

Can you get online with the Firefox browser that comes with UNetbootin? That would be an easy way to see if it is your computer or a conflict with Linux.
Edit: I guess this would be the same thing...

- 06-27-2009 #8I'll give that a whirl, however, did not see the FireFox browser on the UNetbootin prompt...Can you get online with the Firefox browser that comes with UNetbootin?
Can you point me in the right direction to see it?

I thought it was included with UNetbootin.
Mine had the Firefox/Iceweasel browser and I don't remember putting it on the flash drive. Maybe I did though...

Maybe it came with some version of Linux...
Have seen Firefox/Iceweasel included in some of the distros.
Thanks for the help!!
