It's good to see other opinion from different people's point of view. You can;t expect everyone to agree on anything except that this forum is good

I'm not shocked at how low some of them are, but I'm not impressed with NOD32, one of my two choices.

I just really don't want to go back to Avira, at least with their firewall.... under Windows 7 there aren't a lot of firewalls, but their's stinks imo.

Great info...although some might wonder/doubt the reliability of Virus.gr test. (I have no idea whether the results are reliable but for discussion purposes, I am assuming it is..)

Based on the results, the top 5 are all commercial security programs...
AntiVir 9.0.0.407 Personal - 98,56% got 6th in place. What does this mean???

AntiVir 9.0.0.407 Personal is the top FREE security software lol. I don't know about the rest here but Avira has always been my choice.

Taking only FREE security software into consideration, here is the ranking:

    6. AntiVir 9.0.0.407 Personal - 98,56%
    15. AVG 8.5.392 Free - 97%
    18. Avast 4.8.1335 Free - 95,87%
    19. Comodo 3.9.95478.509 - 95,57%
    42. PC Tools 6.0.0.19 - 59,77%
    43. ClamWin 0.95.2 - 52,48%
    47. The Cleaner 2010 Free 6.1.0.2007 - 34,11%
    54. IOBit Security 360 beta 3.1 - 8,92%

What surprised me is that AVG got better result than Avast...and it looks like IOBit Security 360 beta still has a long way to go...

P.S. Who says Free antivirus is no good? Avira, AVG, Avast and Comodo all scored above 95%. PC Tools users might want to consider a change for now...

Here are the comments from virusp against such accusations last year:
    http://www.virus.gr/portal/en/conten...virus.gr-tests
IMO virusp is right. He performs the most reliable av test, because he has no connection with the antimalware vendors.
    As for the results:
They are expected. Gdata, Kaspersky, Avira and all the products that are using Kaspersky's and Avira's engines are the best.

I personally was enlightened to see the comparison. i am looking for a good free AV and really do not know which one to use
Also what is the difference in a paid for and a free AV. Does the free version just not provide as good of protection

    To Rusty,

the difference between free and paid AV is that free AV tend to have slightly less features than the paid version and/or it's meant for home/non-commercial use only. Apart from that, free AV works as good or even better than paid AV. If you think free AV isn't sufficient for your needs, you can always pair it up with other free security software such as free antispyware, anti-rootkit, free firewall and the list goes on...The point is you can make your own security suite without paying a single cent....check out this link for an example:

    http://dottech.org/featured/3174

If you are looking for a good FREE AV, I would recommend either Avira or Avast as these two usually excel in their detection rates. Personally, I am an Avira fan...it is lightweight (does not require much system resources). If you decide to heed my advice and opt for Avira, be warned that Avira free has its own annoyances (ads that pop-up after update) BUT can easily be disabled/removed...simply refer to this link:

    http://dottech.org/tipsntricks/5812

Since we are in Raymond's forum, I assume you trust Raymond's judgement when it comes to security software...I am quoting Raymond's words here:

For me, I think that the best for shareware would be Kaspersky Antivirus 2009 and as for freeware, Avira Antivir. Both is light on memory usage and has very good heuristic detection to detect unknown threats that is not on the virus definition. As for NOD32, it takes up 40MB memory usage on idle and 46MB during scanning. Even the latest major update version 3 couldn’t detect the private trojan. I do not have anything against NOD32 nor hate it but I judge it according to the test results.
    Quoted from: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/...-memory-usage/

And if you were to ask Raymond which is the BEST antivirus (either paid or free), here is what he said:

If I had to make a decision for myself to use which antivirus, I’d choose Kaspersky because it is able to maintain its top position in all tests except only 1 test that it only performed averagely. I noticed that Avira AntiVir does pretty well in the tests
    Quoted from: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/...est-antivirus/

There you go...hope you find my explanation useful.
