You can upgrade (upgrades are cheaper) your Vista to its equivalent Windows 7 edition but you will need a new license and an installer. You don't need to do a clean install if you will just upgrade to the equivalent edition.

i.e. Windows Vista Premium Home ---> Windows 7 Premium Home

Not yet boy....there's still hope..3 chances to be precise

    1. As you know lunaticcranck is probably giving away a Win7 key...so there's a chance there...

    2. And there's another one here: http://www.raymond.cc/forum/freebies...-giveaway.html

    3. Although you may not win a license key for win7, you can use the trial version for 120 days (4 months) and if you wish to, you can reinstall the OS again and make it last even up to 10 years

How: By default, Windows 7 provides you with a 30 days trial period but you can re-arm and extend it to 120 days using this trick mentioned here by Polkadot:

    Windows7 -120days free

Windows 7 ships (in all forms/versions) with a program called Software License Manager (slmgr.exe). This essentially resets the time clock back to 30 days, and can be used for a maximum of three times before it itself 'expires'.

    Start cmd as "Administrator"
    type: slmgr -rearm (Enter)
    Reboot

You are good for another 30 days!

EDIT: Do not forget to backup all of your programs and data every 119 days (a good practice anyway) before you reload that original DVD for another 120 free days! LOL
    Try it...it might work

I know about that giveaway and have already applied for but as you know, my luck ain't good in these..
And yes, lunaticcranck is the last hope but you or me cant pressurize him to give that away. Its only up to him.
And third, i know that re-arming trick and it works but not in a mood to use it now. Will be compelled to use only when there will be no open door left..

Yeppers, not to mention this policy will help them get a better idea of how many people are using non-genuine installations.

BTW, there are deals to be had. The machine I'm currently using is a refurbished one from a recycling outfit in Seattle. Microsoft has a program that allows recyclers to install genuine XP Pro on all the refurbs for almost no money.

Makes very good business sense for Microsoft.

Mine also came with Office 2003 Std as well.

Box has stickers for both XP and Office on the side. It shows that they are issued via the Community MAR Program.

And I've tried IDM and Orbit.. Don't know whats wrong with 'em..
If there happens to be a complete /i386 directory on that machine, then it's a simple matter to create an installation CD for it. Practically every Dell machine I've worked on has a /i386 directory. There's on my refurbished machine too that came preinstalled with XP Pro SP3.

If it does, then go HERE for full instructions. Not hard to do.
