    *Static test

All AV brands that were awarded Advanced+ & Advanced were all good. Dynamic test is much more relevant these days.

    Yes they are diffeent.

    AHead is Avira's heuristics.
    ThreatSense is Eset's heuristics.
    ThreatSense.net is Eset Cloud technology.

Cloud technology submits suspiciously files not in the AV database to their virus analysis. It acts sort of a sensor to enable faster and more accurate detection. Cloud technologies require a working internet connections to function.

Heurictis is detection of unknown virus by an AV by looking at its code. If the code looks similar to a virus/trojan/etc, it will be flag as a virus/trojan/etc usually in HEUR form. It doesn't require a working internet connection. Antivirus with heuristics genetally are succumb to false positive. That is unavoideable.

Avira's heuristics is the best in the world.

By the way, Kaspersky and Eset both have cloud technologies and heuristics.
    Kaspersky's heuristics is Proactive Defense.
Kaspersky cloud technology is called Kaspersky Security Network (KSN)

    ESET's ThreatSenseŽ

    Avira's AHeAD
Thoughts are like a never ending ocean where it is deep, endless and dangerous

    Hi,
Thanx Lunarwolf for taking the time to explain the differences so simply. Now I have a better understanding of these products and can thus help in making better choices.

    @kween,
Avira even without cloud technologies still beat the the big boys.
But in these days, it is crucial for AVs and ISs to incorporate cloud technologies.

Already Avira without cloud technology is lethal, I can't wait for the day when Avira incorporates cloud technologies into its AV.

What good is the cloud if you are not connected all the time?

On the other side, but similar, what good are definitions if you're never got the computer on?

There is no wonder solution out there, there is no perfect cure-all. Use what you feel is best and enjoy life. If it blows up in your face, so be it. You'll know for next time.

I would hate to go for AV with cloud as I have limited bandwidth n dont want to upload samples again n again...

Well I had switched from Avast 5 Free to Trend just for testing purpose but by seeing the result I am afraid will stick to it for longer...

Well about Avast Free, Its almost similar to other Pro or Internet Security except for the additional feature which dont count in detection...

I am little suspitious about the report.
    False postives by
    G Data is 5
    Bitdefender is 3
    and
    Avast is 11
how can that is possible as G Data is using both Bitdefender and Avast engine.
In the past two On-Demand Detection Tests by AV-Comparatives such confusion was not present.
    In Aug2009 report
    http://www.av-comparatives.org/image...c_report23.pdf
    G Data: 9
    Bitdefender: 4
    Avast: 5
    In Feb2009 report
    http://www.av-comparatives.org/image...c_report21.pdf
    G Data: 44
    Bitdefender: 25
    Avast: 28

Hope to see other AV products like Vipre, Dr Web, CA, Comodo in future.
