I read this trick, have been visiting GOATD every day. Haven't found a software that I required. So am still waiting to try this trick.
As they say, "Hope is Eternal".

Indeed...GOTD programs are losing appeal unlike what it used to be last time...I rarely visit GOTD anymore except when I'm really totally bored or when someone informs me of a good giveaway....

Sometimes, you don't even have to do this trick mentioned above...you can just download the trial version of the program from the developer's site and use the serial key given in the readme.txt...it doesn't work all the time but if it does, it really helps if you intend to share the 'freebie' with your friend rather ask him/her to do this 'trick' or you having to upload the 'orginal' setup file to a file hosting site (rapidshare, mediafire, etc)...

I´m visiting "Giveaway Of the Day" (short: GOTD or GAOTD) nearly every day. Though there are only few programs I might use in future, some of them are real pearls that one will not find anywhere else for free...

e.g.
- Anvir Task Manager Pro
- AptEdit Pro
(I´m using both in their (non pro) freeware versions... )
  • One interesting fact on GOTD is, that nearly all listed software manufacturers have also one or more freeware programs in their portfolio. So it is worth to visit their sites.
  • GOTD has its own Freeware section with some very good programs and useful descriptions in it.
  • There exist several forums in different languages on GOTD. Sometimes one can find hints for archiving the given programs there. In the german forums and in the comments sometimes serials and registry entries are posted (not always correctly)....
  • Some people are afraid that the downloaded installer could be infected by viruses. Though I can not exclude the possibility of infection, I did not find any single virus in the last few months.
  • But be aware that the GOTD installer must be allowed to "phone home" and it is not really clear which data are transmitted...
  • some little minority of the programs offered on GOTD is showing inproper behaviour by changing the start page of Internet Explorer to their own homepage, and some programs write theirselves without query in the Windows autostart. I recommend to use some startup monitoring software like the very very good Mike Lin´s free Startup Monitor or Anvir Task Manager

It would be nice to have an specific thread for GOTD here in the forums.

@Sibill

I do know of the Freeware Section but I find that it can't compete with others like Softpedia and MajorGeeks...nevertheless, it's still pretty useful.

As for the ''viruses', I agree...most downloads are safe but there have been a few cases where the files are REALLY infected...my advise is never blindly install GOTD programs without doing a check first...do a Google search for the program for reviews on sites like Softpedia or CNET, go to dotTech.org to see Ashraf's review of it and finally scan it with AV (better still VirusTotal) before installing. If needed, doing a System Restore helps as I've seen a few users had bad experiences (especially with unknown registry cleaners offered at GOTD)....

Question:
If the software has both Setup.exe and Activate.exe, will this tip work?
For example:
Quote:
Installation

Unzip the package you`ve downloaded and run Setup.exe which is included in the package, to install the software. Then run Activate.exe to register the software.

To start the program run Sky Aces WW3.exe from the installation folder (path by default - C:\Games\SkyAces_ColdWar).
