When a software is unable to run, the first logical attempt to fix the problem is by reinstalling the software. However there are times when a software is so badly corrupted that you cannot even uninstall or reinstall the software, leaving you with the only option to reformat your hard drive to reinstall a clean Windows. The Windows Installer Clean Up (MSICUU2.exe) tool developed by Microsoft is probably one of the most useful free tool to fix program reinstallation problems. However this tool can sometimes also damages other components installed on the computer rather than fixing it. In order not to take further risks, Microsoft has decided to pull the plug and retire this risky yet valuable tool in the middle of 2010.
Even if you managed to download MSICUU2 from third party websites such as Softpedia, this tool doesn’t support Windows Vista and Windows 7. The good news is Microsoft has created another tool called “Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter” which is a replacement for the retired Windows Installer Clean Up plus it supports both 32-bit and 64-bit of Windows including the latest Windows 7.The Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter tool runs under Microsoft Fix it engine. After running the tool, first you get to select whether to allow the tool to detect problems and apply the fixes automatically or only detect and let you select the fixes to apply. Next you have to select if you are having problem Installing or Uninstalling a program. Finally you get to select the program you are trying to install or uninstall from the list or if you do not see your program, select Not Listed.
The Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter tool fixes the following:
- Removes bad registry key on 64 bit operating systems.
- Windows registry keys that control the upgrade (patching) data that become corrupted.
- Resolves problems that prevent new programs from being installed.
- Resolves problems that prevent programs from being completely uninstalled and blocking new installations and updates.
- Use this troubleshooter for an uninstall only if the program fails to uninstall using the windows add/remove programs feature.
There are 2 methods to run Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter which is via web installation that requires an active internet connection to download the Microsoft Fix it engine or the portable version of Fix for offline computers. The web install version only downloads the Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter while the portable version which is approximately 40MB in size downloads all Fix it modules where you have to manually select the troubleshooters category (Install or upgrade software or hardware) and then scroll to the bottom and click the Run Now button for Diagnose and fix program installing and uninstalling problems automatically.
